SnortSMS project FAQQ : Why was SnortSMS created? A : The SnortSMS project grew out of the need for an enterprise-level application to syncronize and unify multiple Snort-based IDS sensors. Snort is indeed a great open source IDS solution, but managing or maintaining serveral systems can be time consumming. SnortSMS was designed with the concept of easy and flexibility.
Q : Is SnortSMS FREE? A : The SnortSMS project is covered under the open source licensing scheme (GNU-GPL). You may freely use it without warranty and without support obligations. However, if you find SnortSMS useful in your organization, please offer your support by making a donation. All donations go towards future project development and expenses.
Q : Why was the SnortSMS Agent written in Webmin API? A : Speed. We needed something fast and since we already used Webmin to cluster the IDS servers administratively, it only made sense to create a SnortSMS Agent module for Webmin.
Q : How many sensors can SnortSMS handle? A : A lot. We have personally witnessed it working with 10 sensors with no problems or reduced performance issues.
Q : Does SnortSMS work with Barnyard? A : Yes. We have integrated Barnyard daemon, configuration file, and monitoring support. SnortSMS will also automatically update the 'sid-msg.map' files aswell.
Q : Can I help with the project or offer some feature suggestions? A : Sure. Please visit our project page hosted on SourceForge.
Q : Are you going to release a Windows version? A : Not at this time. Certian creative programming techniques are not readily ported to the Windows platform. We have not had a high demand for the Windows platform. However, if you would like to port SnortSMS to Windows yourself, please let us know, we always appreciate any help.
